What we do
Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu (八光伝心流), the martial art we practice at Koyashi Dojo, boasts a rich and fascinating history. Its roots can be traced back to the samurai warriors of feudal Japan, with a lineage that stretches over a century.
A Legacy Rooted in Samurai Traditions:
Our founder, Ryuho Okuyama, trained extensively under some of the most renowned martial arts instructors of his time. He was a student of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu, a legendary combat system known for its emphasis on joint locks and control techniques. Okuyama meticulously honed his skills and eventually developed his own unique system, Hakko Ryu Jujutsu, in 1941.
Beyond the Battlefield: A Philosophy of Harmony
Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu, meaning "Eighth Light Transmission Way of Jujutsu," reflects a philosophical shift from the battlefield-oriented techniques of the samurai. Unlike some competitive martial arts, Hakko Denshin Ryu prioritizes relaxation, efficiency of movement, and grace under pressure. This approach embodies the concept of "eighth light," referring to a seemingly weak light that packs a powerful punch. Translated metaphorically, it signifies the power of using minimal force and harmony to overcome resistance.
Carrying the Torch Forward:
At Koyashi Dojo, we are honored to be part of this rich tradition. We strive to instill the core values of Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu in our students: respect, discipline, and the pursuit of personal growth. Through our practice, we hope to build a vibrant community where individuals of all backgrounds can learn, connect, and discover their inner strength.
How we train
Waza: The Building Blocks of Martial Arts
Waza refers to the specific techniques and movements that form the foundation of Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu. Our training emphasizes the correct execution of waza, ensuring that students develop a solid understanding of the underlying principles and mechanics.
Henka: Adapting to the Situation
Henka is the ability to adapt and respond effectively to changing circumstances. In martial arts, it's essential to be able to adjust your techniques based on your opponent's movements and the situation at hand. Our training incorporates various drills and scenarios to help students develop their henka skills.
A Holistic Approach
In addition to waza and henka, our training incorporates a holistic approach that addresses the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of the individual. We believe that a well-rounded martial arts practice can lead to greater self-awareness, discipline, and resilience.
A Supportive and Engaging Atmosphere
At Koyashi Dojo, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive community where students of all ages and backgrounds can thrive. Our experienced instructors are dedicated to providing personalized guidance and support, helping you reach your goals and unlock your full potential.
